Overheard a guy at Micro Center say flux is a scam

He was trying to fix a dry joint on a GPU and refused to use rosin flux because he thought it was just extra steps, so I asked him how that worked out after he burned the pad off, has anyone else run into people who think they can skip the basics?

Flux is a scam the same way soap is a scam, I guess that GPU learned a hard lesson about skipping the basics.

Fair point but @angelamurphy, game theory doesn't make something a scam either.

Yeah "skipping the basics" nails it. Flux is just basic game theory applied to GPU mining. People got greedy thinking they could bypass the standard setup and hit big. Now they're learning the hard way that shortcuts cost more in the long run.

Ok hold up, you're right about the basics part but game theory? That's a stretch. Flux isn't some strategy to beat the system, it's just chemistry. Solder needs flux to wet the joint properly, period. Without it you're basically trying to stick metal to metal with no cleaning agent, which is why that guy's pad lifted.
