Only a small part of the human brain is devoted to processing verbal information. Photographers, graphic designers, art directors, animators and many other creative professionals are in the business of solving problems
visually—a skill that has become even more important in the age of social media. Yet words can be important triggers for visual ideas. Learn how the visual problem solvers on a creative team approach their work—and how non-illustrators working with them can optimize communication for better support and enhanced delivery of the client’s message.
How Do Expert Visual Thinkers Approach Communications?
Trevor Irvin Stone- Irvin Productions, one of Atlanta’s foremost illustrators with an especially robust background in sports and the arts. His multidisciplinary portfolio includes illustration, layout and design, corporate ID, storyboarding, web design, sculpture, mascot and character design, architectural rendering and some animation. Trevor was educated at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, was a member of the debut team at CNN, and has taught design in several area colleges. After 36 years in the business, Trevor’s designs for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games remain iconic for our community, even as he has launched TnT Web Design with a partner to better address today’s web-based opportunities.
John Nelson is an accomplished artist with 23 years of experience as an illustrator and conceptual sketch artist for corporate, editorial, advertising, and institutional clients. Recent clients include IBM, GE, United Technologies Corporation, Xerox, Georgia Tech Library, Reliance Worldwide Corp, Oreo Cookies, Kimberly-Clark, and others too numerous to list. John’s areas of expertise include visualizing and drawing objects and environments that do not yet exist, and simplifying complex concepts. John studied graphic design at the University of Georgia and illustration with Miami Ad School via the Atlanta Portfolio Center. His approach to visual problem solving involves first listening to a client’s visual needs and then proposing relevant solutions, either on his own or in group collaboration.
Charles Quinniey is a multimedia specialist and animator who divides his time between Atlanta and Buffalo New York. He has works as a graphic artist and animator with Western New York Media Minority Professionals and previously worked with WKBW Channel 7 and NABET (National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians. He is known for his work on the films Henry’s Future, Super Simple Science Stuff, Bad IQ and Something Dark. He studied economics at Morehouse College and has an MFA in animation from Savannah College of Art and Design. Charles is active in developing the Atlanta animation scene as a member of ASIFA-South, the local branch of the International Animation Society or Association Internationale du Film d’Animation.
Lynda Green, with her partner Arington Hendley, runs the LAPD Atlanta, that is, Lynda & Arington ProDuctions, a studio as lighthearted as its name. Lynda is known for larger-than-life and often humorous advertising photography focused on lifestyle and work—and for a particularly sweet spot when it comes to photographing animals. In addition to still photography, Lynda and partners offer a range of support services to the film industry and produce all manner of photography involving special effects. Lynda has degrees in zoology the University of Georgia and photography from Sam Houston University and teaches at the Art Institute of Atlanta. Her client list includes numerous national brands including Sheraton, Publix, and Motorola as well as local/national brands such as Home Depot, Delta Airlines, Cooking Light Magazine, the Atlanta Braves, and Emory Medical.
