A designer at the Rio Rancho meetup said charge by the project, not the hour, and my first invoice proved her right
Back in March I sat next to a freelance brand designer at that casual meetup near the Rio Rancho library and she told me flat out to stop billing hourly because clients nickel and dime your time. I ignored her for two months, then finally quoted a logo job at a flat $850 instead of my usual $45 an hour and finished it in 11 hours total. The hourly math would have been $495, so that one switch made me $355 more on the same work. Now I'm second guessing my whole rate sheet and wondering if anyone else in town has tried flat project pricing on bigger contracts, like a full site build, and how you handle scope creep when the client keeps adding pages.
