Client cut me loose after I spent $900 on their project

Put together a whole website for a local shop last month. They paid the first invoice no problem, then vanished when I asked for the second half. The $900 covers software, stock photos, and about 30 hours of my time. They finally emailed saying they found someone cheaper, but they already used my mockups. Has anyone else given up the deposit money just to walk away from a bad client?
