Hit $5k in a single month for the first time and it changed my whole pricing strategy

I used to think charging $25 an hour for graphic design was fair in ABQ. Then I landed a 3-month retainer with a Santa Fe nonprofit that bumped me to $5,200 in October. Seeing that number in my bank account made me realize I was leaving money on the table with my old rates. Has anyone else had a milestone that made them rethink what they charge?

Don't let one good month trick you into thinking you can charge more forever. Nonprofits have soft money and grant cycles that dry up fast leaving you scrambling. $25 was probably right for your market until you prove you can get consistent work at the higher rate.

Question if it's really that serious? Man, you're acting like one good month is a sign the world's ending. Not every nonprofit operates on a shoestring budget - some have actual funding for years, not just grants. The OP probably knows their own clients better than some random person guessing from a forum. Charging $25 might have been a rip off if they were doing quality work and just undervaluing themselves. You don't gotta "prove" anything except that you deliver value, and if someone's happy to pay $35, why not? Stop scaring people into thinking they can't raise rates unless the market begs them to.

Honestly don't overthink it. If people are paying it, charge it.
