Hot take: that 'bill 3x your hours' advice is wrong for ABQ clients
I went to the freelancer meetup at the Rio Grande library branch last month and about 5 people kept saying to bill 3x your hours on every quote. That math falls apart here. I do web work for small shops along Central Ave and my real numbers from 14 projects this year show markup closer to 1.6x once you count the callback time. One plumber on San Mateo told me he pays $1,800 for a site because that is what the guy down the street charges, not because it takes 3x the hours. Most local clients are running thin margins and they will just ghost you if you pad the quote that hard. Who here actually tracks their hours after the job and knows their real markup number? I would love to see if I am the odd one out or if everyone quoting 3x is just guessing.
