Appreciation post: How Claude helped me actually finish a novel draft in 3 months

I've been trying to write a sci-fi novel for like 6 years and never got past chapter 3. Then back in February I started using Claude to help me plot out character arcs and brainstorm dialogue options. Not having it write for me, just helping when I got stuck. I went from zero finished chapters to a full 80,000 word draft by May. The difference was wild - I used to spend 2 hours staring at a blank page. Now I can smash out 1500 words in an hour with the AI bouncing ideas around. Has anyone else tried using AI as a writing partner without letting it take over your voice?

okay but i gotta be real with you, i've seen this play out with a bunch of my students who try to "use ai as a tool" and it almost always ends up with their writing sounding flat and generic. like sure you got words on the page but are they YOUR words? the whole point of struggling through a draft is finding your own voice and figuring out what you actually want to say. AI can't do that part for you, it just spits out the most statistically likely sentence. i'd rather take 6 years and write something that sounds like me than 3 months and have to wonder if any of it was really mine.
