Can we talk about how everyone thinks bigger AI models are always the answer?
I sat in on a webinar out of Chicago last Thursday where a woman from a small farm co-op said their 3 billion parameter model running on a single old GPU beat the big cloud API for crop disease spotting, and it made me think most folks chasing the newest giant model are just burning money for bragging rights.
My buddy runs a coffee shop and he swapped his fancy $2000 espresso machine for a $300 one and nobody could taste the difference, the whole "more money means better" thing is everywhere. 3 billion params doing the job on one old GPU is exactly that. We just assume bigger is better cause the ads tell us so.
