I argued with a friend in Denver that AI art was just copying, but she showed me a tool that builds new textures from scratch.

She pulled up a demo of a program called TextureForge that used a small set of base images to create a completely new, seamless pattern for her game in about 20 minutes, which made me see generative models as more than just mixers. Has anyone else found an AI tool that changed their mind about what it can actually create?

That's still using base images to copy from though.

I read it's more like learning a style, not copying.

Fionat55's point about base images is stuck on the input. The real shift is the output. That texture didn't exist before, so calling it a copy feels wrong.

Wait, the whole texture literally didn't exist before the AI made it? That feels wild to wrap my head around. How do you even argue that's copying when the result was never there?
