I finally ran an AI image upscaler on a 20 year old family photo
Grandma handed me this tiny, faded picture from 2003 last week, all wrinkled and blurry from being in a wallet forever. I ran it through an AI upscaler as a joke, thinking it'd just turn it into a pixel mess. Instead it actually filled in her face details and even guessed the pattern on the blouse she was wearing. Has anyone else tried this with old pictures and gotten creepy good results or was that just luck?

Something wild nobody mentions is these upscalers basically create new evidence of stuff that never existed, like that blouse pattern it guessed. Could be handy if you're trying to settle a family argument about what color something really was in an old photo.

That "creating new evidence" part got me. I used to think upscalers were just making things sharper, but you're right, they're basically filling in blanks with made up details.

Right there with you, I always thought upscalers were just fancy sharpen tools until I saw one fill in a whole license plate number that was just a blurry smudge in the original. Completely changed my view on how much these things are actually guessing.
