I finally trained my own image model without a $5000 GPU setup
Used to rent cloud GPUs for like 3 weeks each project and pay $80 an hour just to test settings. Last Friday I got a free Colab session to run LoRA training on a small art dataset, 400 images I tagged myself. It took 2 hours to finish and the output is honestly better than the big model I paid for in March. Anyone else switch to local or free tools and see quality actually go up?

Wait, isn't it crazy how the free stuff can beat the expensive stuff sometimes? I had the exact same thing happen last month with my landscape set, only 250 images and I ran it on a free Kaggle session. Took me like 90 minutes versus the 3 days I used to wait for cloud jobs to finish queuing. The colors came out so much cleaner and my style actually showed through instead of that generic look the paid model gave me. I think the difference is I finally understood the settings because I could actually watch it train in real time and tweak things on the fly. Now I'm honestly mad I wasted so much money on those big setups when a broken laptop and some patience got me better results.

Hold on, I get what you're saying but I see it differently. Yeah, free tools can give you decent results these days, but that's usually because you already know what you're doing from all those paid runs. Watching it train in real time is nice, but that doesn't mean the free setup is better. The paid cloud time let me test way more settings way faster, so I could actually find the right ones without guessing. A weekend on a decent GPU taught me more about learning rates and batch sizes than a month of free sessions ever will. You got lucky with your style, but that kind of luck doesn't scale when you need to train something big or complex.
