Met a guy at a Cleveland library who showed me how he uses AI to describe old photos for his blind mom
I was at the main library in Cleveland two Saturdays ago using their public computers because my laptop charger died. This older guy next to me, maybe 70, kept asking me how to get his phone photos onto the screen. I helped him out and he showed me what he was doing: he had a folder of family photos from the 60s and 70s, and he was using one of those AI image description tools to write out what was in each one. His mom is 94 and lost her sight about 6 years back. He reads her the AI descriptions over the phone every Sunday. One photo was a cookout in 1972, and the AI picked out details like the color of the patio chairs and a dog in the corner that he had completely forgotten was there. He sat there and read it to her that same afternoon while I was still in the chair. If you had told me 10 years ago that a computer could describe a blurry Polaroid well enough to make a 94 year old woman laugh, I would have called you crazy. Anyone else using these tools for family stuff like this? I want to try it with my own shoebox of pictures but I have no clue which app he was on.
