Pushed a chess AI to play 500 games against itself, and it invented a queen sac nobody's seen
Ran 500 self-play games in a row on my laptop last weekend and the engine started sacrificing its queen on move 12 in ways no human opening book shows, which makes me wonder if we're even building these things to teach us or just to surprise us.
Back in college I had a cheap chess program that would do the same dumb knight move over and over in the endgame and I just figured it was broken. Turns out it was probably finding some weird path I could not see. What gets me about your engine is that move 12 queen sac is so early, like it threw out the whole point system we gave it and decided the king was worth more than the piece. My guess is it stumbled on some line where losing the queen opens a file or traps the other king in a way our books never bothered with because no human would dare try it. Kind of wild that the thing we built to copy us just ended up ignoring our rules instead.
