Was using GPT-4 for summarizing client emails for 4 months before someone told me about custom instructions
I had this moment last Tuesday where I was copy pasting the same instructions like 'summarize this in 3 bullet points' into ChatGPT every single time for the same client. My coworker walked by and was like why don't you just set a custom instruction for that client's email format? I didn't even know that feature existed. Turns out I wasted like 30 minutes a day doing the same manual prompt over and over. Now I have three different custom setups for different types of emails and it saves me probably 2 hours a week. Has anyone else had a facepalm moment like this with a basic AI feature you just never bothered to learn?

Bruh I felt this in my soul. I was manually typing "translate this to Spanish" like a caveman for weeks before my nephew laughed at me and showed me the custom instructions feature. Now I have one for angry customers, one for the ones who type like they're drunk, and one for my boss who loves bullet points. The worst part is the 30 seconds of existential dread every time I realize how much time I wasted.

@robin896 the existential dread hits different when you do the math on it.

@ray_burns The real gut punch is when you start building them for stuff you didn't even know you needed. I've got one for "make this sound like my uncle telling a story at Thanksgiving" and another for "explain this to me like I'm a golden retriever with a laptop." @gray314 hit it spot on with the math thing too - I figured out I spent roughly 47 hours just typing the same three sentences over and over before I learned about custom instructions. That's basically a whole work week of copying and pasting the same few words like a dummy.
