Went from calling AI code tools a fad to using one daily in about 3 weeks
Three weeks ago I sat in a diner in Dayton with my cousin, who does QA, and told him autocomplete for code was a parlor trick. I'd tried one back in 2023 and it kept suggesting loops that didn't even compile, so I wrote the whole category off.
Last Tuesday I got stuck for 40 minutes on a broken CSV import in a script I don't own. He told me to paste the traceback in and see what came back. It pointed at a field name with a trailing space, which I then confirmed with a diff. Forty minutes of my life, gone, and the tool caught it in maybe 15 seconds.
I'm not saying it writes good code. It doesn't know when to shut up. But for reading errors and writing the boring glue lines I keep retyping, I've used it every day since. Am I going to regret leaning on this when it's wrong someday, and what do you all do to keep yourself from trusting it too much?
