Seriously? Cleaning it first is such a waste of time... the heat kills everything anyway. That's just how it works. You're adding a whole extra step for no real benefit. I've never cleaned mine first and nothing bad has ever happened. It's one of those made up rules people get hung up on for no reason.

Flores.mark asked if you forgot to clean it first? Honestly that's probably exactly what happened. But @gray_hall4 saying you shouldn't clean it because heat kills everything is just wrong. I mean yeah the heat might kill germs but it doesn't burn off all the old burnt oil and crumbs. That stuff just smokes up when it gets hot again. I learned the hard way too after my air fryer started smelling like a campfire every time I used it. Takes two minutes to wipe it down with a damp cloth before cooking.
