The frozen french fry debate, I'm on the other side now

Last month I finally tried the frozen fries everyone raves about in this group, the ones from a big red bag at Costco. After three batches at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, they came out dry and hollow tasting, nothing like the shoestring ones I get at a diner in Scranton. I think the hype is because they're cheap, not because they're good, and I'd rather spend $4 on fresh cut potatoes from the farmer's market. Has anyone else been let down by a popular air fryer staple, or is it just my unit running hot?
