Appreciation post: the safety wire job I saw at the Sioux Falls hangar changed how I feel about pigtails
I used to think safety wire pigtails were just for show and would rush through them. Then I saw a guy at a hangar in Sioux Falls do a pigtail with exactly 6 twists and a perfect loop that sat flush. He told me it saved him from a loose bolt on a Cessna 172 last winter. I switched to doing 6 twists and checking with a mirror now, and my turns take 2 minutes longer but I sleep better. How many twists do you all use on a standard .032 wire, and do you bother with the mirror?
Six twists on .032 and a mirror? Next you'll tell me you floss too. Seriously though, if a Sioux Falls bolt is what got you checking mirrors, at least it was cheaper than the Cessna finding out for you.
