Dropped $340 on a "lifetime" torque wrench calibration kit that was junk in 8 months
I do a lot of work on a Cessna 172 my flying club owns and got tired of hunting down a calibrated torque wrench every annual, so I bought one of those mail order calibration checker kits for $340. Eight months in, the little reference beam inside drifted way off and I cross checked it against the shop's real standard, it was reading about 6 foot pounds light at 100. Thing is I had already torqued my gear leg bolts with it thinking I was good, so I had to pull everything back apart and redo it just to sleep at night. Nobody warns you that a cheap checker gives you false confidence, which is worse than no checker. Anyone found a brand that actually holds spec past a year or do I just have to eat the cost of sending mine out every time?
