Spent 6 hours chasing a fuel leak that turned out to be a $4 O-ring
Had a Cessna 172 in the shop last Tuesday with a slow fuel smell in the cabin. I pulled the wing root panels, checked every line, pressure tested the system twice, and even swapped the fuel selector valve thinking it was the culprit. After about 6 hours of head scratching, a buddy walked by and pointed at the drain valve on the belly. The O-ring there was flat and cracked, letting a tiny seep that traveled up the belly. I swapped in a new $4 O-ring and the smell was gone. I felt pretty dumb for not checking the simplest thing first. Has anyone else gotten tunnel vision on a job and missed the obvious cheap fix?
