Used to torque by feel for 12 years, bought a $180 wrench last spring and I'm still mad about it
I know, I know, sounds dumb. I spent over a decade just going by hand on landing gear bolts and never had one come back to bite me, or so I thought. Bought a calibrated torque wrench off the tool truck in April and checked a few of my old 'good enough' fasteners against spec, and a couple were off by more than 15 percent. Makes me wonder how many of those got signed off without a second look, so now I'm second guessing every logbook entry I ever made. Any of you older guys made the switch late like this, or am I the only one who was winging it?

Torque specs assume clean threads, so old oily bolts can read way off even with a good wrench.
