Appreciation post: A zip tie and a screwdriver got me out of a jam in a tight attic space
I was running a new wire for a motion sensor in a cramped attic in Portland, and my drill battery died right as I needed to secure the last clip. Couldn't reach my bag without crawling all the way back. I looped a zip tie through the clip's hole, hooked my flathead screwdriver through the tie, and used it to pull the clip tight against the joist from a few feet away. It held perfectly and saved me a huge hassle. Anyone have other weird little tricks for working in tight spots?

My old boss in Seattle used to say the best tool is the one you already have in your hand. Your zip tie trick is a perfect example of that kind of on the spot thinking. It feels like half of fixing things is just solving the puzzle of how to reach them.

Actually, I'd say it's more like ninety percent of the job.

Wait, did your old boss also have a weird rule about always keeping a butter knife in their toolbox? I had a guy once who swore by using a bent paperclip to reset electronics, which is basically the same vibe.
