Bought a $400 cable toner for a job in a 1920s house, total lifesaver or a waste?

It found a break in a plaster wall in ten minutes, but my partner says a $50 tester would've done the same thing with more time. Which side are you on?

Time saved on one job can pay for that tool.

How much time does it actually save you per job?

Man, I used to roll my eyes at that idea. Then I bought a better drill that lets me swap bits in like two seconds. Sounds tiny, but over a day of hanging cabinets? I stopped losing my mind looking for the right screwdriver head. That thing paid for itself in one afternoon just by cutting out the little frustrations.
