Chat with a retired ADT tech changed my whole install approach

Had coffee with a guy who did alarms back in the 80s and he told me to stop running wires straight through joists and start using the edge of the floor plate instead. Tried it on a ranch house in Austin last Tuesday and saved about 40 minutes of drilling. Anyone else pick up weird old school tricks like that?

Ran the wire tight against the subfloor on a split level last week and it saved me from having to crawl under the house to drill through a triple beam. The old timer I learned it from also showed me to staple the cable up inside the drywall channel before the sheetrock goes on. That alone cuts out half the fishing time on new construction.

Yeah, I used to think stapling before drywall was overkill but now I get it.

Hard agree on the floor plate trick - been doing that since a mentor showed me back in '09. Stapling the cable in the drywall channel before sheetrock is another game changer, saves so much back-and-forth on new builds.
