Rant: I stopped fishing cable through old walls with a rod and tried a magnet, cut my attic time in half
I've been running wire for 11 years and always used the same fish rod and tape setup. Last week I had a job in a 1920s house in Bakersfield with lath and plaster walls, so no easy paths. I grabbed a $22 rare earth magnet set I'd had sitting in my van since summer and used it to track the bit through the wall cavity from the attic. What used to take me 45 minutes per drop took about 15. I did 6 drops in under 2 hours, and the homeowner even commented on how quiet I was up there. Now I'm wondering what other basic methods I've been clinging to just because they're what I learned on. Anyone got a shortcut for finding fire blocking without poking a bunch of holes?
