Showerthought: a hotel keypad in Tulsa taught me something about my own installs
Stayed at a place in Tulsa last weekend and the room door keypad had a little wear pattern worn into the 4 and 7 keys, which told me way too much about how often those get pressed. Made me start wiping down my customer keypads after every install so I am not leaving the same free hint behind. Any of you doing anything about worn buttons on older panels, or just swapping them out?
How much wear are we actually talking before you swap the whole panel? I've seen some keypads where just the 1 and 5 are rubbed smooth from what I assume is a default code like 1-2-3-4-5, and other times the paint is gone on half the keys and it still works fine for years. Are you replacing at the first sign of shine, or waiting until the numbers are straight up unreadable? And when you do swap, do you go back with the same brand or try something with a different button material that holds up better? I keep going back and forth on whether worn keys are even a real security issue or if I'm just overthinking it after reading that Tulsa story.
