Spent $60 on a cheap panel tester, it saved me from a nightmare job
Tbh I bought one of those no-name keypad testers off Amazon last month just to check wiring before I mount panels. I was on a job in Tacoma where the old system had been rewired by someone's cousin, and the zones were all over the place. That little thing caught 3 shorts before I even screwed the panel to the wall. Has anyone else had a cheap tool like that pay for itself on the first use, or did I just get lucky?

Did you test it against a known good zone first, or just trust it out of the box? I grabbed a $40 toner off eBay for a panel swap in an old strip mall, and it found a nicked wire inside the wall that the last guy just taped over. Would've spent half a day pulling new wire if I hadn't checked first. That thing's been in my bag ever since, and the fancy brand name gear sits in the truck lol.
