The old timer at my supply house told me to quit using 22/4 and I ignored him for a year
A guy named Ray who runs the counter at the supply house in Toledo told me two winters back to stop pulling 22/4 for keypads and just run cat5e or 22/6 so I'd have spare conductors. I laughed it off because 22/4 was cheaper and I'd been doing it 9 years without a problem. Then last March a job in a brick ranch bit me hard, homeowner wanted a second keypad in the garage after I'd already closed up the walls, and I had zero spare wire in that run. I ended up fishing a whole new line through a finished ceiling for a $150 add-on that ate my whole Saturday. Since then I've run 22/6 on every keypad drop and used the extra pair for a motion, a glass break, whatever the guy wants later. Ray was right and I was just cheap and stubborn. Anybody else get burned by no spare pairs on a retro, or am I the last one to figure this out?
