Tried using a wireless bridge for a detached garage alarm and it went totally haywire
So I had this job out in Phoenix last month where the customer wanted their garage monitored but no way to run a wire across the driveway. I set up a wireless bridge between the house panel and garage sensors, thought I was being clever. Everything worked fine until their neighbor fired up a ham radio on Saturday morning and the whole system started triggering false alarms every 10 minutes. Learned the hard way that those bridges can pick up random interference from stuff you'd never expect. Has anyone else run into weird RF issues with wireless setups?

Did you check the frequency bands on the bridge before installing or just grab whatever was cheapest. Ham radio can blast through some of the unlicensed bands real easy if you pick the wrong one. Maybe swapping to a 5GHz unit would solve it if the neighbor sticks to lower frequencies.

Oh, I have to push back a little on that one. Ham radio actually operates on very specific, licensed HF, VHF, and UHF bands, not the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz ISM bands that Wi-Fi gear uses. So a neighbor's ham setup typically won't "blast through" a 2.4 GHz bridge unless they're running a powerful transmitter right next to the antenna, which is rare. The more common problem is interference from things like baby monitors, cordless phones, or microwave ovens that share that unlicensed space. And swapping to a 5 GHz unit might actually make things worse if the neighbor is on the 2.4 GHz band, but it depends. You'd want to check the actual noise floor first before buying new hardware. Good thought though, it's always worth looking into the frequency side of things.
