Update: More folks around here want their alarm system tied into smart plugs

In my area, I've noticed a real uptick in clients asking if their security setup can turn off lights or fans automatically. I began testing a few wireless relays that work with common alarm panels to handle this. Take this with a grain of salt, but adding this demo to my service call has made homeowners really happy. It's a simple add-on that makes the whole system feel more modern to them.

I saw a GE Simon XT panel at my friend's house last year and thought linking it to smart stuff was just a gimmick. After he showed me how his porch lights cut on when the alarm trips, it completely changed my view. It makes the old system feel way more useful without being complicated. I was wrong to dismiss it, because that kind of simple upgrade is exactly what people want now. It proves you don't need a whole new smart home to get some real convenience.

Remember that Simon XT panel hasn't been a GE product for years, it's made by Interlogix now. Lots of folks still use the old name from when GE owned it. Your point about simple upgrades is spot on, since the real value is in those automation tricks. It's cool how older gear can still pull off smart home stuff without a full swap.
