Was fitting a new threshold and sliced right through the alarm's door contact wire. Total dumb move, but now I always look for those thin cables before I cut anything.

Remember doing something just like that when I was replacing a window frame. Cut right through the thermostat wire and had no heat for a day. It was a real pain to fix, and I felt pretty silly. Now I always run my fingers along the area and use a stud finder with wire detection. You really learn to respect those hidden lines after a mistake like that.

We've all had that "oh crap" wire moment.

Last year I was patching drywall and my screw nicked a Romex line for an outlet. The spark scared me half to death and tripped the breaker. Ever since then I keep a voltage tester and a good non-contact sensor in my tool belt. It's not just about finding studs anymore, you gotta hunt for all the hidden stuff before any cut or drill.
