Found a 200 year old oak near Saratoga that changed how I approach root zones

I was scouting a job up near Saratoga last month and there's this massive white oak behind an old farmhouse, must be 200 plus years based on the girth. The owner pointed out how the grass was greener in a ring around the drip line, which I thought was just watering at first. Turns out the soil compaction from decades of tractor traffic had made the roots push out further than the canopy reached. I dug a test hole about 15 feet past the dripline and hit feeder roots the size of my thumb. Now I'm measuring root spread on every big tree consult instead of just eyeballing the canopy. Has anyone else found roots that far out on mature oaks, or is this just a weird clay soil thing?

Read somewhere that oak roots can stretch two to three times the width of the canopy, especially in heavy clay. Sounds like you found the proof in person.

Two summers ago I watched my neighbor's oak tear up their driveway over on Maple Street, roots lifting the concrete like it was nothing. He had this big fancy paver job done the year before, cost him a fortune, and by August the whole thing looked like a rollercoaster. I told him the tree had been there way longer than his house, so it was gonna win that fight every time. We measured the spread of the branches one afternoon and yeah, the roots had crawled out at least twice that distance, all under the asphalt. Ended up he had to cut down the tree and redo the driveway, which probably set him back double what the pavers cost in the first place. Crazy how something that looks so solid above ground is just fighting a losing battle underneath.
