Found out red oaks in my area have a 72 hour wilt clock that blew my mind

I was reading up on oak wilt in the Texas A&M forestry bulletin last night and discovered that once you cut a red oak, the sap beetles can spread the fungus within 72 hours during spring. That means if I don't paint the wound immediately after a pruning cut, I'm basically inviting disease into the whole neighborhood. My crew has been leaving cuts raw for days sometimes without thinking about it. Has anyone else run into this time crunch issue with oaks where you live?

I used to think oak wilt was something you only had to worry about if you cut a tree down or left a big limb hanging. That 72 hour window really changed my mind on how careful you have to be with even small pruning cuts. Now I make sure to have a can of pruning paint or latex spray handy before I even start working on any oak tree. It is a hassle to paint every cut but losing a whole tree or infecting the neighbors is way worse. Your crew might push back at first but it is worth getting them in the habit of painting everything right away.

...and that's exactly how I ended up with a very confused neighbor staring at me while I stood in his driveway painting a two inch scrape on his oak tree last spring. I spotted the fresh wound from a lawnmower and just went right over with my can of latex. He thought I was some sort of tree vigilante. I told him about the 72 hour rule and he just nodded like he was humoring me, but I'll bet next time he nicks that tree he'll think twice. It's funny how something so simple can save so much trouble, but people just don't realize the little things matter until it's too late.

Respect the 72 hour rule or face the consequences.

Honestly, you mentioned the crew pushback and that is a real problem I've seen too. How do you actually get them to paint every single cut even when it's a tiny scrape or they're in a hurry and don't want to slow down? Do you just stand over them until they do it or have you found some other way to make it stick?
