I bought a cheap stump grinder from a yard sale in Boise and lost $800

It was a used 'Chipper King' model that looked fine but the engine seized after grinding just three stumps. I had to rent a proper machine to finish the job, which cost me another $300 in rental fees and lost time. Has anyone else had a bad experience with used equipment from non-dealer sources?

That's rough, but honestly, yard sale finds can be a total gamble. My neighbor scored a perfectly good pressure washer for fifty bucks that's lasted years. Sometimes you just get unlucky with a hidden issue. Checking the oil and trying to start it before buying is about all you can do. For eight hundred bucks though, that's a tough lesson.

My cousin bought a riding mower that died after two weeks.

Yeah, check the fuel line and filter first. Old gas turns to varnish and clogs everything up.
