Just hit a 41 inch DBH red oak and now I'm second guessing the whole 'bigger is always older' thing
Measured a red oak in a client's yard near Greenville last Tuesday and it came out to 41 inches DBH. The owner swears it was planted when the house went up in 1962, which would make it 63 years old. I've cored smaller oaks that rang up over 100. So do you all trust growth rings or site history when you're writing up a report? Anyone got a good rule of thumb for telling a fast yard tree from an old forest tree without a core?
