Just realized most guys are pruning at the wrong time and it's killing their maples
I was out on a job in Portland last week and the homeowner asked why her Japanese maple looked so bad after the last crew pruned it in early spring. I told her that's probably exactly why. Maples bleed like crazy if you cut them when the sap is running in late winter or early spring, and it stresses the tree way more than people think. I have been telling clients for years that late summer or just after the leaves drop is fine, but so many crews still do it in March because that's when it's easy to see the branch structure. I checked the wound sites on her tree and sure enough, the cuts from the spring were still weeping and two of them had started to rot. It took me about 20 minutes to explain that the tree was not dying from disease, it was dying from bad timing. Has anyone else noticed clients getting told spring is the best time no matter what species they have?
