Showerthought: topping trees is not a real practice and I'm done being polite about it
Had a homeowner in Cedar Rapids ask me to top three maples last month because her neighbor's guy does it cheaper. Topping forces weak shoot growth that snaps in ice storms, which is why I've seen more storm damage on topped trees than any other kind. Anyone else getting pushback when you tell folks no?
The weak shoots thing is the part people never believe until they see it. Those fast-growing sprouts are basically glued on, so the first heavy snow and the whole top just shears off.
And half the time it's not even cheaper. You pay for the topping now, then pay again in three years when the tree's a hazard, or pay to take it down. The neighbor's guy won't be around for that part.
