Spent 4 hours trying to figure out a maple decline that was right in front of me

Had a mature silver maple in Portland that was looking rough - thin canopy, early leaf drop. I checked soil pH, root zone compaction, even sent samples to the lab. Turns out the irrigation line from the neighbor's lawn was flooding the root crown. 4 hours of diagnostics over 2 weeks, and it was just a busted pipe dripping 20 gallons a day. Anybody else ever waste that much time on a simple fix?

Man, I've been there. Had a customer's Japanese maple that was yellowing and dropping leaves like crazy. Spent a whole Saturday checking everything and it was just their neighbor's pool backwash line dumping chlorinated water on the roots every night.

That thin canopy, early leaf drop' part really hit home for me. I had a similar situation a couple years back with a red oak in my backyard. I was running all those same tests, checking everything above ground, pulling my hair out. Turned out the previous owner had buried a trash pile right under the root zone, and the roots were slowly suffocating. It's humbling, isn't it? You can have all the book knowledge and tools in the world, but sometimes the answer is just staring you in the face from a completely different angle.
