That fancy pruning sealant I swore by turned out to be doing more harm than good
For years I used pruning paint on every oak and maple cut I made, especially in the spring after storm damage. A retired arborist from Ohio told me last September to stop, said the sealant traps moisture and rot behind the cut. I figured he was old school and wrong, but I decided to test it on a row of 12 maples I was thinning. I sealed half the cuts and left the other half bare, then checked them in November. The bare cuts dried clean and callused over nicely, while the sealed ones had dark, soft bark creeping around the edges. Now I only use the stuff on trees with oak wilt in the area, and even then I read the label twice. Has anyone else ditched the sealant after seeing the results, or is there a case where you still use it that I'm missing?
