That time I spent 3 years using the wrong notch technique on big removals

Had a veteran climber on a job in Philly last month call me out on my notch cuts. He pointed out that I was basically making all my notches too small and it was messing up my hinge control. I always just cut what felt right, never really measured or thought about it. He showed me his method with a bigger face cut and proper notch depth and it was night and day on the next spar. Made me wonder how many other basics I've been doing wrong. Has anyone else had a seasoned guy correct a fundamental thing like that?

Getting the face cut right made all the difference for me too.

The face is definitely the trickiest part. I spent so long trying to get the proportions right and they always looked a bit off. What finally clicked for me was mapping out the basic shapes first, like a circle for the head and then adding the jawline after. Once I had that rough outline down, everything else just fell into place. It sounds simple but it saved me so much frustration.

Oh man, I totally used to skip the basic shapes and just dive right in. I thought mapping it out would slow me down but honestly it just made everything look wonky. Now that I actually try it your way, the proportions finally make sense and it clicks way faster.
