The tree wrap mistake I finally stopped making in Maple Grove

For years I used the cheap burlap from the hardware store winter wrap on my maples, then last February I saw the bark splitting right under the tape line and it hit me. The pros use a breathable white wrap that reflects sun, not the dark stuff that bakes the trunk on warm days. I switched to a polypropylene wrap on 11 trees this season and the temperature difference on the south side was about 8 degrees cooler when I tested it. Has anyone else noticed the bark damage showing up a season later, or is it just me?
