Unpopular opinion: the old timer at my job in Madison taught me more in one lunch than my whole cert class
I was on a removal job last month in Madison, a big silver maple leaning over a garage, and this guy named Ray who has been climbing for 34 years was on the crew with me. At lunch he watched me set my tie in point and just shook his head, then walked over and said "you're tying in above the wound wood, that's the weak spot, drop it 3 feet lower." I moved it and sure enough the union was solid instead of that spongy feel I had been ignoring all morning. He also showed me how he tests a limb by bouncing his weight on it before committing, which sounds dumb but I felt the difference right away. I've got my ISA cert and 6 years in but nobody ever explained tie in points that way in a classroom. How do you guys pick your tie in point on a questionable tree, do you go by feel or is there a rule you stick to?
