An old chef told me I was mincing garlic wrong after watching me for 2 minutes

He showed me to use a pinch of salt and drag the knife across instead of chopping up and down, and after trying it once I cut my prep time from 8 minutes to maybe 3, has anyone else had a simple kitchen trick like that totally change their routine?

Huh, I actually gotta disagree here. I tried that salt and drag method a few times and it just made a bigger mess for me. The salt crystals kept rolling off my cutting board and the drag cut felt less controlled, I ended up with uneven chunks instead of a proper mince. I'm back to the old up and down chop, it just works better for my hands.

Oh man, that knife drag thing blew my mind too when I learned it. I was mincing garlic the hard way for years, basically just hacking at it, and it took forever. That salt trick really is a game changer, it keeps the garlic from sticking and the drag cut is so much smoother. I remember the first time I tried it, I actually laughed at how stupid I felt for not figuring it out sooner. It's wild how one little tip can save you so much time and frustration in the kitchen.

Ha, right? I swear half of cooking is just realizing you've been doing everything the dumb way for years. I had the same moment with garlic, just crushing it with the flat of the knife and suddenly feeling like a genius. The salt trick is the real MVP though, keeps that sticky mess from flying all over the cutting board. Makes you wonder what other basic stuff we're all doing wrong.

@ben_fisher That salt trick is the real MVP for sure. I started doing the knife drag method after seeing it on a cooking show, and it cut my prep time in half too. Funny how a tiny change like that makes you rethink everything else you do in the kitchen.
