Debate: Do you fix it yourself right when it breaks or wait and figure out if you actually need it back?

My washer machine died on me last Tuesday in Portland, and I spent 4 hours taking it apart before realizing the drum bearing was shot and the repair would cost $350. My buddy said I should've just switched to using the laundromat for a month to see if I even missed it. So which side are you on - jump into fixing or wait it out and reconsider?

Right, but what if taking it apart taught you something useful for next time?

Man, come on now. Is a broken washing machine really some big life changing event? You spent four hours and figured out it wasn't worth fixing. That's just a Tuesday. I get the whole "see if you miss it" thing, but that just sounds like an excuse to be lazy and use the laundromat. And let's be real, how many people are actually gonna go a month without washing clothes at home before just getting annoyed and buying a new machine? It's a washing machine, not a broken leg. You either fix it or you don't. No need to turn it into a whole philosophical debate about minimalism or whatever.
