Debate: Renting gear vs buying it for a one-off project

I had to choose between renting a high-end camera for $200 for a weekend job or buying a used one for $600. I went with renting because I figured I'd only need it once. But now the client wants a follow-up shoot next month, so I'm out another $200. Would you have bought it instead, or is renting still the smarter move here?

...and honestly, is it though? Like, you're talking about $200 here. That's two fancy dinners or one slightly aggressive shopping trip. Renting gives you zero commitment and no storage headaches (cameras collect dust, believe me). Plus, what if the client bails after this second shoot? Then you're stuck with a $600 paperweight. I'd rather pay as I go and keep my options open.

What if the client keeps booking you though, then renting adds up fast.
