I used to think hot water was needed for laundry, but cold water has lowered my bills and clothes are still clean.

Cold water changed everything for my laundry too. I used to shrink all my sweaters with hot water, never going back.

Wait you used to actually use hot water for everything? That's wild to me... my mom drilled it into my head that hot water ruins clothes and makes colors fade like crazy. I've only ever used cold unless something was really gross. I guess I just assumed everyone knew that. You must have been going through so much detergent and energy for no reason. Kinda blows my mind that worked for you.

My buddy Steve from work washes his gross construction clothes in hot water every time. His favorite band shirt turned pink after like two months, it was tragic lol. He still won't listen to me about using cold.
