That HVAC guy on Reddit said my filter was fine - 2 months later my coil froze solid

Someone in this sub told me to just vacuum my washable filter instead of replacing it, said a $15 filter was a waste. I listened because they had like 50 upvotes and seemed legit. Then my AC stopped blowing cold in July and the tech said my evaporator coil was a block of ice because airflow was choked. Cost me $180 for the service call plus a $40 filter. Has anyone else gotten bad advice here that ended up costing them real money?

Man same thing happened to me, some guy swore up and down washable filters were the way to go and my unit froze up less than a month later. Cost me a $150 service call and I felt like an idiot for listening to random internet advice.

Oh man, I feel your pain on that one. I swore by those fancy washable filters for a year before my AC died in the middle of July. The service guy told me the airflow was too restricted and that's why the compressor gave out. Cost me almost four hundred bucks for the repair and a new filter. Now I just buy the cheap ones and swap them out every month like clockwork. Learned that lesson the hard way too.

Oh man, "learned that lesson the hard way too" is basically my life motto at this point. I've wasted so much money on "better" stuff that just broke faster, it's almost a talent at this point.
