Appreciation post: learning I was framing subjects wrong for years

I used to always put the Milky Way core dead center in my landscape shots. Then I saw a photo by a guy named Jack from a forum meetup in Flagstaff last summer. He had it off to the left with a tree leading the eye across. It looked way better. Do you think centering the subject is a common mistake or does it depend on the shot?

Respectfully disagree, centering works fine if the sky is dramatic enough on its own.

Respectfully disagree" huh? @brooke448 you're braver than me, I'd be terrified my sky wasn't dramatic enough and I'd just end up with a boring photo of a cloud in the middle of a frame.

Is it really that deep though? I mean yeah centering stuff can look a little basic sometimes but who cares if the photo comes out looking cool? People get so caught up in rules like "leading lines" and "rule of thirds" and honestly half the time it just ends up making everyone's photos look the same. Maybe it's just me but I feel like if the shot makes you happy and you like how it turned out then that's what matters. Plus some of the best astro shots I've seen have the galaxy right smack in the middle and they look amazing. Idk I just think there's way too much gatekeeping over what's "right" in photography.
