Can we talk about stacking photos for deep sky objects?

I've been trying to get a good shot of the Orion Nebula from my backyard in Tucson for months. My pictures always looked grainy and washed out, even with a decent telescope. Last week, I finally watched a video where the guy said you need at least 30 frames to stack, not the 5 or 6 I was doing. I was just taking a few long exposures and calling it a night. The difference when I tried stacking 40 two-minute subs was crazy. The dust lanes actually showed up. Has anyone else had that lightbulb moment about how many frames you really need to get a clean image?

Took me about a hundred blurry frames to figure it out...

Wow, that's a LOT of trial and error. @tessalane has a good question about the number of attempts. What was the final clue that made it all make sense for you?

How many subs did you try before it clicked?
