Finally saw the Andromeda galaxy through my own lens after 3 failed tries at a dark site near Flagstaff
Two Saturdays ago I drove 2 hours out to a spot near Flagstaff with my old 8 inch dob, and the sky was so dark I could see the Milky Way as an actual cloud. I had tried this 3 times before from my backyard and always got a fuzzy smudge or nothing at all. This time I star hopped from Mirach for about 20 minutes and there it was, a bright core with this faint dusty oval stretching out way past what I expected. I had no idea it takes up so much sky, it looked like 3 full moons wide through my 25mm eyepiece. I tried my phone against the eyepiece for a photo and got a blurry mess, so now I get why people spend real money on tracking mounts. How do you all handle the camera to eyepiece thing without it looking like a jellyfish?
